Project Complete Lawyer

Complete Lawyer is an auspicious program jointly organized by Cochin Institute of International Arbitration (CIIArb) and Law and Justice Research Foundation (LJRF) as a tribute to Late (Prof) Dr N R Madhava Menon. The country honored with a Padma Bhushan posthumously.

The concept underlying the project was developed from the vision of Prof Menon, discussed in a speech[1] rendered by him on 25th June 2016 in the Kerala Bar Council Auditorium Ernakulam, organized by a start-up law firm.  In short, the concept focuses on reducing the incubation period of a law students’ transformation into a professional.  It could be achieved only through intensive training and by providing opportunities to demonstrate the trained skills of the budding lawyers.

Project Complete Lawyer, therefore has two components (1) clinical training on the various skills of legal practice and a study of the legal institutions; and (2) engaging the participants in ‘Community Lawyering’, a concept very popular in the western world.  It is worth mentioning here that Prof Menon during his life time wished to implement Community Lawyering’, as a tool for social development of the scheduled tribes in Wayyanad District in Kerala State.   Hence, the organizers believe that the Project would be a fitting tribute to the Father of Modern Legal Education.

A structured ‘protocol’ is being developed, which would be a complete code for the participants as well as the faculties, in matters relating to training and implementation of the project. The participants will also work under the guidance of an expert team, in espousing he grievances of the marginalized sections of the community, and gain real time lawyer experience.

The Project envisages a total duration of 7 years of training, which would start from the first year in Law School, of a student in the 5-year LL B Stream: and 5 years in the case of student in the 3-years LL B Stream.  Since the training protocol is in its development stage, it is proposed to start implementation of the project, with an intake from the final years in both the streams.  In the following years, project would take students from both final year and pre-final year.

Application (Google form), for applying for the project has been circulated.  The students perusing 9th semester in the 5-year LLB Stream and the 5th semester in the 3-year LLB stream may apply.  The selection process would be based on the inputs in the application form and also on the basis of a personal interview.  Genuine interest of applicants, to practice law, would be preferred.

The last date for receiving applications in Google Form circulated by Project Complete Lawyer would be 20th July 2021.   The date of commencement of the training will be announced latter.  Click the link for opening the application (google form)
